Teach In: Mending + Dyeing Workshop and Radical Craft Discussion

As part of Taylor Lorraine Harvey's senior thesis show What is Power? I will be doing a workshop for natural dyeing with food waste and mending clothing and hosting a tandem discussion of radical craft. What does it mean to engage in craft, to be engaged in the joyful creation of one's own life? How can we take back aspects of the reproduction of daily life in a way which gives us strength and nourishes us instead of feeding directly back into capitalist systems of valued and devalued labor?

Bring something to mend, or something to dye*, or both. You will leave with at least one new skill, or perhaps new techniques for an existing skill, and hopefully lots of new questions and thoughts around what it means to engage with your own life through craft.

*Because we will be working with natural dyes, the materials we dye will also need to be natural. I will do my best to have one dye for cellulose fibers (cotton, linen, rayon, etc) and one for protein fibers (wool, silk, etc), but will default to a cellulose-prepared dye in the event we can only accommodate one dyebath. Please wash your item beforehand, the dye will take much better! If you have any questions, please email me!

Natural Dyeing Three Ways

Plant dyes can create an incredible range of colors and effects on natural fibers. In this workshop, designer Laurin Guthrie will demonstrate three very different techniques for creating color with natural dyes. The class will use local, seasonal plants to create beautiful, watercolor effects on silk, Oak Gall (also known as ‘Dyer’s Gold’) and iron to paint or print a subtle grey and the ancient blue, Indigo, to create striking effects with resist techniques. Each student will design and create a silk scarf, an organic cotton tote bag and an organic cotton handkerchief using these techniques, and will leave with the knowledge to bring rich, vibrant and natural color into their homes, wardrobes and lives. The workshop will take place primarily outdoors, so please bring sunscreen and water!

Cost: $150, including materials
